Tuttlingen and its surroundings

Tuttlingen - international centre for medical technology on the young reaches of the Danube

1997 saw the town of Tuttlingen celebrating its first historically-documented mentioning as "Tuttiliningas" 1200 years ago. It was an occasion which featured a multitude of fĂȘtes, cultural events and a large parade.
Tuttlingen's symbolic landmark is the ruin of the Honburg fortress, built in 1460 and dismantled in 1645. The ruin is located on a hill which in recent years has been completely encircled by the county's principal town and its 35,000 inhabitants. A short, steep ascent is rewarded with a glorious view of the centre of the town and far beyond over the surrounding countryside. The chessboard street plan in the heart of the town is particularly noticeable, the fruits of chief agricultural landscaper and surveyor Carl Leonard Von Uber's plans, having being laid down after the devastating fire of 1803 which destroyed the town.
The Marketplace (Marktplatz), with its distinctively modern fountain pyramid (Brunnenpyramide), and the Town Hall (Rathaus), an edifice with classical origins, form the centre of the town. A pedestrian zone has been created around the Marketplace, offering a extensive variety of shopping outlets and gastronomic establishments. A further Tuttlingen symbol is to be found only a few metres from the Marketplace. Tuttlingen's Protestant Church (evangelische Stadtkirche), built between 1815 and 1817, boasts a magnificent art nouveau facade and an interior which creates a decidedly unusual atmosphere. The Municipal Gallery (StĂ€dtische Galerie), located next to the Town Hall when travelling towards the banks of the Danube, was opened in 1987 and offers the perfect opportunity to spend some time in a relaxing, soothing setting, enjoying the variety of regularly-changing exhibitions. The Place de Draguignan, located a few metres to the west and named after Tuttlingen's twin town in France, is probably the most attractive setting in the summer months in which to enjoy a drink or snack in its pavement cafĂ©. This square is also the setting for the annual Tuttlingen Wine Festival (Tuttlinger Weinstrasse), a gregarious wine fĂȘte which also offers culinary delights and is enjoyed by thousands over an extended weekend who come together to share a flowing goblet in an atmosphere of fun and bonhomie. It can be safely said that this festival, together with the Tuttlingen Town Festival (Stadtfest), an occasion organised on a lavish scale, and the Honberg Summer, a music and show-time festival with international stars, represents a highlight in Tuttlingen's annual programme of artistic events and festivities.
The splendid "Fruchtkasten", a former storehouse for tithes levied from the population, is also situated only a few metres further west of the Place de Draguignan, being easily identified by its striking green facade. It houses the Municipal Museum (Heimatmuseum), a must for visitors which includes a comprehensive medical technology section, offering an overview of developments from early beginnings until the present day. Directly opposite the museum entrance is the Tuttlingen House (Tuttlinger Haus), first officially opened in 1997, which offers an insight into the local lifestyle in recent centuries and represents a handsome exhibit, complementing the overall museum attractions offered by Tuttlingen.
Commercial life in this town is, quite naturally, heavily influenced by the manufacture of surgical instruments and medical technology. In addition to Karl Storz and Aesculap (with its ultra-modern "Aesculapium" training centre), both internationally renowned market leaders, several hundred other small and medium-sized firms make a decisive contribution in both manufacturing and trade in this important technological field which forms the commercial backbone of the entire county. The entire spectrum of this historical development is also impressively documented in the regional museum in the "Fruchtkasten".
Tuttlingen offers everything for those seeking a leisure programme during their sojourn to compliment their business activities. Quite simply - Tuttlingen is a fun place to be! You can take advantage of the hospitality offered by the town's hotels and guesthouses during your stay, the excellent traditional Swabian cuisine on offer which, naturally enough, is complimented by a range of international cuisine to satisfy every taste. There is also an extensive range of leisure activities on offer, ranging from tennis to swimming and bowling. A final tip for your summer stay: rent a rowing boot on the Danube, opposite the Hotel Stadt Tuttlingen, for a totally relaxing experience (yes indeed - that's also on offer in our town!) and the chance to experience Tuttlingen from a totally different perspective. It's a really worthwhile experience!

Tuttlingen's magnificent surroundings

There are a multitude of places and sights worth visiting in the locality and further abroad, all only a few minutes drive from Tutlingen. Here's a small selection of what is on offer:
Of the three satellite communities of Esslingen, Moehringen and Nendingen, a trip to Moehringen (6 km west of the town centre) is a particularly attractive experience. The historical character of the town itself has been well preserved, many of the houses still being graced with half-timbered facades. Other gems include the magnificent town hall and the church of St. Andrew (St. Andreas), all of which makes a visit to this community, a registered clean-air location, most rewarding. Moehringen is transformed into a major centre of the "Festival of Fools" during Fasnet, the annual carnival period in February/March, an occasion marked by a multitude of lively events.
Travelling a further 5 km westwards, the Donauversickerung is a natural spectacle which should not be missed. Practically the entire Danube seeps down into a network of subterranean chambers, emerging 20 km further south in the Aach basin in Aach/Hegau as one of the most potent springs in Germany.
One should take a 2.5 km hike north of Tuttlingen from the Klippeneck up over Denkingen (21 km from Tuttlingen) to Dreifaltigkeitsberg (Holy Trinity Mountain: 985 m), a path characterised by the absence of a discernible difference in altitude. The route stretches along a steep plateau dotted with vantage points offering a splendid view of the surrounding landscape. Both the outset and finishing stages of this trip offer excellent chances to stop off for a pleasant break.
The most important and adventurous trip to be taken brings one eastwards of Tuttlingen into the Danube Valley (Donautal). You reach Fridingen after a journey of 14 km above the Danube which takes you through the towns of Nendingen and Muelheim, both distinguished by their mediaeval town centres. Fridingen, founded around the year 1300, includes a castle and houses with half-timber facades which have been magnificently restored among its treasures. The most exciting stretch of the Danube Valley begins here, with steep cliff faces, caves (some, such as the Kolbingen cave (Kolbingener Höhle), which can be explored), castles and striking vantage points, among which is the Knopfmacherfels, a mere 4 km from Fridingen, a feature deserving of particular mention. The observer can enjoy a view of the famous Beuron monastery from this precipice, a Benedictine establishment distinguished by elements dating from the baroque and rococo periods. The monastery's location, among a peripheral backdrop of cliff faces, could not be more impressive. A good road takes the traveller a further 25 km into the imposing Danube Valley to the town of Sigmaringen, with its famous castle.
Neuhausen ob Eck (10 km east of Tuttlingen) is home to a very special kind of open-air museum (Freilichtmuseum). There are at present 21 houses on the site which vividly depict life in earlier times in the region. Both large farm buildings and outhouses and the dwellings of humble casual labourers have been erected here, with a school, town hall, church, smithy and stove-fitter's workshop arranged around the communal well, creating a small village setting. Special exhibitions, presentations and a variety of events supplement the exhibits on offer in the open-air museum between April and the end of October.
The federal highway travelling south via Stockach brings you to Lake Constance (Bodensee) after approximately 25 km.
The Witthoh, the mountain most closely associated with Tuttlingen (which reaches an altitude of 860 m) is reached after a journey of 7 km south of the town. Periods of good visibility not only offer a view of the entire Hegau, but also the spectacular alpine range from the Allgaeu to Santis (2501 m) and on into the uplands around Bern.
Time should also be set aside to visit the magnificent surrounding countryside. You will find that there are no long journeys involved to reach any of the day-trip destinations on offer. Pleasant stopping-off points are to be found practically everywhere offering, for example, a hearty snack after a strenuous hike. Are you visiting Tuttlingen without a car? Don't worry! A well-developed regional transport system will bring you to your destination, with the added advantage of making a positive contribution to environmental conservation. A journey with the natural park express (Naturpark-Express) in particular offers the chance to travel through the Danube valley to Sigmaringen and enjoy to the full the natural beauty encountered along the way. You really couldn't find anything more relaxing than that, could you!
